March Meeting

The next CPLUG meeting will be on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 6:30 PM at ITT. Hopefully we won’t have yet another snowpocalypse, and we’ll actually be able to have a meeting!

The topic for March is iSCSI. iSCSI is an IP-based storage networking standard for linking data storage facilities. By carrying SCSI commands over IP networks, iSCSI is used to facilitate data transfers over intranets and to manage storage over long distances. iSCSI can be used to transmit data over local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), or the Internet and can enable location-independent data storage and retrieval.

Feel free to RSVP on the CPLUG Meetup page (optional), and we’ll see you then!

No meeting tonight!

Tonight’s CPLUG meeting has been cancelled due to the forecast of 12+ inches of snow. We’ll try again next month (3/9/2010).

After you run to the store to stock up on bread, milk, and eggs, it’ll be a perfect night to check out the #cplug IRC channel at irc.cplug.net, port 6667 or 6697 (ssl). :)

Hopefully we’ll see you in March!

In case of inclement weather…

Please note that, right now, AccuWeather is forecasting another 3 – 8″ of heavy snow mixed with sleet for Tuesday night. If that’s the case, the upcoming meeting may be canceled due to bad weather.

The cancellation announcement will be posted here and on the mailing list. Be sure to check the mailing list and blog before driving over to ITT. :)

This month… CouchDB

Say goodbye to tables and say hello to document-oriented databases… this month’s meeting topic will be CouchDB, presented by Vikram Dighe!

Apache CouchDB, commonly referred to as CouchDB, is a free and open source document-oriented database written in the Erlang programming language. It is designed for local replication and to scale vertically along a wide range of devices.

The meeting will be (weather permitting) on Tuesday, February 9 at 6:30 PM as usual.

Feel free to RSVP on the Central PA Linux Meetup page if you are planning to attend!

February Meeting

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 9, 2010. As usual, we’ll be meeting at 6:30 PM at ITT in Harrisburg.

We have a speaker (details to be announced), but could still use one or two short (5-minute) lightning talks if anyone is interested. Either post a comment or email the mailing list if you’d like to help out.

Meeting tonight!

One last reminder that there is a CPLUG meeting tonight (1/12) at 6:30 PM at ITT…

Bill Hathaway will be doing a talk on ZFS, a combined file system and logical volume manager designed by Sun Microsystems. ZFS can do a lot of cool things (volume management, snapshots, copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking, automatic repair, RAID-Z) and is definitely worth checking out!

After Bill’s talk, Nathan Powell will be doing a 5-minute lightning talk on OpenSolaris on the Desktop. And of course, we’ll be ordering pizza too. :)

See you there!

Meeting on Tuesday

Quick reminder that the next CPLUG meeting will be at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, 1/12/2010.

This month, Bill Hathaway will be talking about ZFS, a combined file system and logical volume manager designed by Sun Microsystems. After that, Nathan Powell will be doing a lighting talk on using OpenSolaris as a desktop.

See you there!

December Installfest

It’s December… so this month we’ll be doing our annual “installfest” and social extravaganza on Tuesday, 12/8/09 at 6:30 PM.

Please bring some food to share — snacks, deserts, and similar goodies would be great. We’ll still order pizza too.

If you have any Linux/OSS questions, please feel free to bring them. If you’d like to bring your laptop or desktop to get help with something, you are welcome to do so!

And if you don’t need help with anything, no problem! You can either help other folks, or just hang out and talk about geeky things and eat yummy food. :)

Check out the Meetings page for directions, and see you there!

Asterisk, Dropbox, and EC2

CPLUG’s November meeting was a triple-header with presentations on Asterisk PBX (Dennis), Dropbox and Ubuntu One (John M.), and cloud computing with Rackspace and Amazon EC2 (John P.).

The next meeting will be December 9, 2009 at 6:30 PM.

Less than 24 hours left to register for CPOSC

One final reminder… registration for the Central PA Open Source Conference ends tonight at midnight. If you haven’t registered yet, now is your last chance. :)
